Vireo Health will cut the ribbon on its medical marijuana dispensary Thursday in Johnson City, one of 20 that are opening statewide in the rollout of New York's medicinal cannabis program.
The facility, at 589 Harry L Drive, was announced last summer. New York City-based Vireo, formerly known as Empire State Health Solutions, was among five companies awarded the right to manufacture and dispense marijuana in non-smokeable form for the treatment of medical conditions including cancer, HIV/AIDS and epilepsy.
Vireo is currently serving patients at dispensaries in White Plains and Queens, and manufactures the medicine at a facility in Fulton County.
New York's medical marijuana program has been a work in progress since Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the Compassionate Care Act in July 2014. As recently as December, advocates criticized the slow rollout, saying the state lacked infrastructure to connect doctors, patients and drug providers less than a month before the program was to take effect.
