Medical Marijuana Gardens Frozen in Vancouver

VANCOUVER — The city council voted Monday night to make it illegal to create community marijuana gardens in Vancouver — at least for now.

The governor of Washington signed a law last year allowing medical marijuana users to create community gardens, but left it up to the cities to regulate them.

Supporters of that law said medical marijuana users need options for getting the drug legally.

"Medical marijuana has made it so I can have, to the maximum ability, a functional life," said user Troy Williams.

For now, the Vancouver City Council put a one-year moratorium on the gardens issue, to allow time for legislators to possibly rewrite the law with more specifics.

"We have concerns about where they are located and the continuing move to make marijuana accessible and legal," said Sandra Storm with Prevent Coalition.
