LAWTON – The Lawton Village Council will take more time to study a proposed ordinance regulating medical marijuana before acting on it.

The measure would require caregivers to register with the Lawton Police Department and place other conditions on the distribution of marijuana by registered caregivers and use by medical-marijuana patients.

President David Cornish, who on Tuesday suggested that the council table the ordinance, said the Michigan Municipal League had just come out with an extensive report on the issue, which he wanted council members to read.

There is a lot of ambiguity over the medical marijuana issue right now, said Latwon Police Chief Thomas Verburg. "At this point, it's a federal violation of the law to possess marijuana – period," he said.

Michigan voters approved legalizing marijuana for medical purposes in November 2008.
"There are a lot of communities that are just proposing a moratorium on the whole thing right now," village Clerk Andreia Gailhouse said of local regulations.
