Medical Marijuana Treatment Goes High-Tech

It seems like every industry is getting the high-tech treatment nowadays, and the booming medical marijuana industry is no exception. As more states legalize marijuana for medical use, innovative companies are stepping up to offer solutions that are safer, healthier, more convenient, and just downright fun for patients.

Vaporizers, which allow inhalation of active ingredients without the harmful byproducts of smoke, have long been a favorite and an area where innovation comes in many forms. The viVape Vaporizer is a smartphone-like vaporizer that will compete with your iPhone or Android device on the cool factor. It features a color touchscreen with full temperature controls. An LED on the unit starts to glow when the temperature's right for use. It's also durable, which is always a good thing for tech gadgets.

There's also the Extreme Q V-Tower Vaporizer equipped with a fully functioning remote control for the ultimate "lean back" experience. Lots of neat things are packed into this unit, including a full LCD screen control panel, a quiet fan and even an automatic shut-off sleep timer which somehow seems appropriate for this type of device. For those "green" enthusiasts (of the environmental kind, that is), the device is also optimized for energy efficiency.

Aside from vaporizers, vending machines have also jumped into the fray. A company called Dispense Labs hopes to provide convenience with Autospense, a vending machine requiring a registration card and PIN number (with fingerprints for 24-hour access). According to ABC News, the machines are placed in a caged and camera-controlled room and are "difficult to break into" for those with hopes of scoring more than the usual snack foods, although they might not be a bad complement. Patients are also given a choice of "medicinal variety and quantity" along with a variety of payment options. If someone does try to rob the machine, membership and access is "revoked permanently," although whether that's an effective deterrent remains to be seen. There's not much news on available locations yet. Medbox is also offering a similar machine.

While these offerings are intriguing, they're not altogether surprising in an ever-connected world where people demand the "latest and greatest" thing. With the rapidly increasing number of dispensaries in states where medical marijuana is legal, convenience and health are at the forefront of industry innovation and will be for some time to come.
