New York dispensaries have received medicinal marijuana licenses, and with them in hand, they are getting ready to sell cannabis legally starting on Thursday. Columbia Care is present in one of the busiest dispensary locations in New York City's Union Square neighborhood. In July, the state granted five medicinal marijuana licenses.
Columbia Care is run by a former Goldman Sachs investment banker Nicholas Vita. He is getting all set to open his shop on 14th Street, and has a CityMD office and a Chickpea restaurant as business neighbors.
Vita, Columbia Care's chief executive, said that nearly every subway line in the city is linked to Union Square, making the location very accessible.
If you are wondering that there are no marijuana plants on-site, then in that case, it may interest you that Columbia Care has been growing its marijuana in Rochester, because the law wants the cultivation and manufacturing of all cannabis in the state.
The exterior of the dispensary has been made intentionally discreet, without any marijuana plant designs generally seen countrywide. In the front, there are five security cameras, and patients will be allowed inside only after they will show medicinal program cards. On entering, the customers are called back to the pharmacy area. The dispensary's interior space is not sterile like a doctor's office and is modern and warm.
However, there are still prevailing many key larger questions like how many medical practitioners are going to participate in the program, recommending medicinal marijuana to patients.
Furthermore, health insurance does not include medical marijuana due to which patients need to pay out of pocket. Columbia Care is going to run a separate program dedicated to low-income patients. The company has given its consumer-facing price proposals for approval to the state.
Matt Karnes, founder of GreenWave Advisors, an industry watcher, "There remains uncertainty ... [around] the willingness of the medical community to recommend marijuana as an alternative treatment".
