A proposed ballot measure would make North Dakota the 18th state to approve marijuana use for people who suffer from painful illnesses.
California was the first state to approve medical marijuana in 1996. Montana allows the practice. South Dakota voters have rejected medical marijuana initiatives twice in the last six years.
Fargo state Rep. Steve Zaiser (ZY'-zur) is chairman of the campaign. Secretary of State Al Jaeger is reviewing the petition. Supporters want to put it on the November ballot.
The proposed law is 22 pages long. North Dakotans would need a doctor's permission to use marijuana, and they could get the drug only from a state-approved dispensary.
Zaiser says the initiative won't make marijuana more widely available, or give children an easier way to get it.
