Aspiring marijuana growers, who have formed alliances with several major hospitals, have been attracted to New York's medical marijuana program. These growers aim to make the medical drug accessible to patients.

The companies who wished to be licensed distributors and growers of medical grade marijuana inside the state had to submit an application, the last date of which was Friday. However, the State Health Department has not been able to release the exact number of companies, or their names who applied.

However, North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System announced that they have submitted an application for being a licensed partner with Silverpeak Apothecary. The hospital group enjoys a heavy presence in New York City and the medical marijuana company is based in Colorado, where it is legalized for both medical as well as recreational use. For the sake of application, a new company named Silverpeak NY was created.

Chief Executive, Michael Dowing, of North Shore — L.I.J System said in a statement that it has formed a partnership with Silverpeak. He further added that the health group has formed a partnership with them as Silverpeak 'recognizes the importance' of making marijuana accessible to their patients and try to find 'every legal option' to manage symptoms of illness.

Marijuana has been long associated as a potential drug for treatment against diseases such as Alzheimer's, epilepsy and cancer. This licensing could potentially have the gates open for patients willing to accept marijuana as a drug. Currently, insurance companies have no schemes to cover medical marijuana.

Other major academic medical centers, such as the Mount Sinai Health System of Manhattan and the University of Rochester Medical Center announced that they have been in talks with other companies as well who applied for license. They have also made their intentions clear of working with them if they are chosen by the state. However, medical centers have also said that they were not applying for medical marijuana licenses themselves.
