About 800 people are expected to attend a marijuana business conference in Eugene this weekend.

The Oregon Medical Marijuana Business Conference will draw dispensary owners, marijuana growers and edibles producers, as well as people hoping to get into the marijuana industry, according to conference organizer Alex Rogers, who owns an Ashland medical marijuana clinic.

This is the fifth marijuana business conference Rogers has helped organize.

Gary Johnson, former governor of New Mexico, is a speaker, as well as Steve DeAngelo, executive director of Harborside Health Center in Oakland, California.

Rogers said he expects people going to the conference will have questions about balancing the medical marijuana market with the recreational one. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission will oversee the recreational marijuana industry, which won't launch until sometime next year.

Rogers said he wants the state to leave the medical marijuana program alone for now, a message he expects to deliver at this weekend' event.

"We are adamant about taking things slowly," he said.
