Voters will decide at Tuesday night's special town meeting whether to regulate where medical marijuana dispensaries can open in Pembroke.

The town meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Pembroke Community Middle School. The town's planning board will hold a public hearing to discuss the pot-shop bylaw at 7:30 p.m. Monday at town hall.

Residents at town meeting will vote on a proposed zoning restriction that would add medical marijuana dispensaries to the so-called "adult overlay district," preventing any shops from opening within 1,500 feet of a residential neighborhood, schools, other marijuana dispensaries or sites licensed to serve alcohol.

The zoning restriction, if approved, would limit pot shops to the northeast section of town near a cluster of commercial properties off Route 139. The restrictions are similar to those limiting where strip clubs, adult-entertainment stores and tattoo parlors can open in Pembroke.

Voters will also decide Tuesday whether to spend $150,000 toward the engineering costs of putting up a traffic light at the intersection of Route 53 and Pleasant Street. Selectmen Chairman Gregory Hanley said the engineering costs will likely be reimbursed by the state when the project is finished.

This town meeting will be the first adhering to a new bylaw that requires at least 150 voters to be in attendance before the meeting can start, but only 100 must be present for the meeting to conclude. The previous law required at least 150 voters to be present throughout the entire meeting.

"That should end the issue we've had in the past about finishing meetings," Hanley said.
