A Lee Newspapers poll of Montana voters shows strong support for a medical-marijuana ballot initiative and higher tobacco taxes, the Missoulian reported Sept. 28.
According to the poll, 58 percent of voters in Montana support Initiative 148, which will appear on the November ballot. The initiative would allow for the legal use of marijuana by people suffering from serious medical conditions.
The poll also showed a 59-percent approval rating for Initiative 149. The ballot measure would increase tobacco taxes on a pack of cigarettes from 70 cents to $1.70 to fund healthcare programs and other projects. The initiative also would increase the tax on snuff from 35 cents to 85 cents an ounce. Taxes on other tobacco products would increase from 25 percent to 50 percent of the wholesale price.
The telephone poll of 625 registered voters in Montana was conducted Sept. 20-22 for Lee Newspapers by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research, Inc.
