Colorado Springs - City Council will hear from the public tonight about whether to impose a 90-day moratorium on licensing any businesses wanting to distribute medical marijuana.

The hearing begins at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall. It will be followed by council's regular weekly work session.

Whether to allow or license medical marijuana dispensaries is a question facing many Colorado cities this year, although a majority of Colorado voters approved the use of marijuana for medical reasons nine years ago.

Pueblo city officials have only begun to study how other cities address the issue, and council intends to put the 90-day moratorium in place while it considers options.

The ordinance on the table for public comment Monday is the 90-day moratorium, although some members of the public will probably want to address other issues that are related to the legalized selling of marijuana for medical reasons. For example, voters in Breckenridge will decide Tuesday whether to legalize the possession of up to 1 ounce of marijuana. Heading in the other direction, Colorado Springs City Council is urging its code enforcement officers to crack down on medical marijuana growers in that city because growing and distributing the drug is still illegal under federal law.

In other matters, council intends to discuss the 2010 budget at its work session, when the public hearing on medical marijuana is completed.
