Mayor Bob Filner has ordered San Diego law enforcement and the city attorney's office to back off code enforcement at the city's medical marijuana dispensaries.
U-T San Diego reports Thursday that Filner says his support of medical marijuana was clear during his campaign and he's committed to ensuring access for those who legitimately need it.
He also assured city residents that safeguards will keep the dispensaries from areas where children gather like schools or playgrounds.
Filner vowed to work with medical marijuana advocates to draft an ordinance to allow regulated dispensaries to operate.
City Attorney Jan Goldsmith said he would drop a dozen pending cases against dispensaries under the mayor's directives.
About 100 cases have already resulted in shuttered shops, and those decisions can't be reversed by the mayor.
