The only medical marijuana dispensary in western Massachusetts is in Northampton, but Springfield could be the second.

Springfield could be getting it's first medical marijuana dispensary by the end of this year. Out of 7 applicants, the city selected Hampden Care Facility to open the dispensary at 506 Cottage Street, a building that is currently advertising it is for lease. The facility's Tom Gallagher told 22News their lawyer is now negotiating a host agreement with the city. Once the city and state approve it, the facility can be built.

"In Hampden County, there are approximately 9,300 people who would benefit from medical marijuana," said Gallagher. "3,000 reside in Springfield. I think there are an adequate number of potential patients."

Easthampton's City Council just approved a 25-hundred square foot growing space next door to Eastworks. The medical marijuana would be cultivated at 122 Pleasant Street in Easthampton, and each plant grown would be grown according to USDA organic standards. Samples of each plant would be sent to different sites throughout the state to test the potency and chemical content.

Hampden Care Facility's dispensary would compliment a neighboring dispensary in Northampton, New England Treatment Access; which opened in September of last year.

Hampden Care Facility hopes to open the Springfield dispensary within the next 9 months. Gallagher said the city will approve or reject the plans within the coming weeks. If approved, it'll move on for state approval.
