A small trial shows a dose-dependent reduction in peripheral neuropathic pain in patients with diabetes, according to a study published in the July issue of The Journal of Pain.

Mark S. Wallace, M.D., from the University of California in San Diego, and colleagues conducted a randomized trial in 16 patients with painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy. They examined the short-term efficacy and tolerability of inhaled cannabis; each participant was exposed to four single dosing sessions of placebo or to low, medium, or high doses of cannabis in a crossover design. The authors performed baseline spontaneous pain, evoked pain, and cognitive testing. Subjects were administered aerosolized cannabis or placebo and the pain intensity and subjective "highness" score was measured during the first hour and for an additional three hours.

The researchers found that spontaneous pain scores were significantly different between doses (P < 0.001).

Comparisons between placebo and low, medium, and high doses were significant (P = 0.031, 0.04, and < 0.001, respectively), as were those between high versus low and medium doses (both P < 0.001). The high dose had a significant effect on foam brush and von Frey evoked pain (P < 0.001). The high dose had a significant negative effect (impaired performance) on two of the three neuropsychological tests.

"This adds preliminary evidence to support further research on the efficacy of the cannabinoids in neuropathic pain," the authors write.

After reading several articles about how mj has helped so many people with a variety of ailments (including myself) I began to think. If humans have cannabanoid receptors, they must be here for a very good reason. What if mj was put on this earth to treat humans for every health problem we have? That would mean our government has been withholding from sick people the medication we all will need at some time in our life, including those who oppose this wonderful plant. I mean what if? So many people suffering needlessly because so many are simply misinformed or lied to about this plant. That should be criminal.

this is old news for me! I'm coming up on 1 year of almost no pain when medicating with MJ. Now with our government admitting that MJ helps cure cancer and help in a lot of ailments! The fight is on and real to legalize MJ for Medical Purposes and may in the near future the government will legalize it!

It helps post traumatic neuropathy, as well. With the cloud that gabapentin puts me in, I still don't get the relief from my tingling as I get with cannabis. I don't get burning because mine was caused when bone fragments from L-2 ripped through my "cauda equina" tearing some of the nerves and causing a 7cm dural tear!
