Sunnyside Adopts Cannabis Moratorium

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. – Sunnyside has become another in a long line of Yakima Valley cities to pass a six-month moratorium on medical marijuana gardens.

Yakima, Wapato and Zillah did the same earlier this year, giving officials more time to iron out details involved with regulating the gardens after the state Legislature allowed residents to establish them.

Sunnyside City Council voted 5-0 in favor of the moratorium at a meeting Monday night. Councilmembers Paul Garcia and Theresa Hancock were absent.

"I didn't want us to become a safe haven" for the gardens, said Mayor Jim Restucci on Tuesday.

In July, a new state law allowing up to 10 qualifying patients to grow 45 plants in a collective garden took effect. The legislation allows cities to license, zone and impose health and safety requirements on the gardens.

Federal laws still consider marijuana an illegal drug.
