A Virginia doctor is in the second phase of a study that he said could bring healthcare to many people in the area.

"These trials will help us answer the question, 'Is there sound, medical research to support the use of medical canabinoids?," said Dr. Paul Lyons, an epileptologist at Winchester Neurological Consultants.

"If so, what type, at what doses with what predicted side effects, and for what predicted seizures, and for which patients?," Lyons added.

Lyons is looking for people between the ages of 2 to 55 who have Lennox Gastaut Syndrome, and people between the ages of 2 to 18 who have Dravet syndrome to participate in the controlled trials.

Lyons believes the process of the testing is a huge opportunity.

"This is a particularly emotionally urgent matter because patients - and their families in particular - parents of children with epilepsy are desperate," Lyons said.

Natalie Davis said the test is the only way to know what options her 4-year-old son Chase has for effective treatment.

"We have tried lots of medications and lots of things for his seizures, so for him to have the best quality of life that he can without the seizures getting in the way," she said.

According to Lyons, the medication could be strong enough to significantly reduce seizures, but lacks the THC to produce a "high" sensation.

Davis said Chase can have between four and 30 seizures a day, so for her, just being part of this test is a huge step in the right direction.

"I hope that it would decrease the seizure activity so that he doesn't tighten up, and we can work on therapy - try to get him standing," she said.

Qualified patients will participate in the test for four months.
