Visalia officials are close to establishing new rules that would regulate the distribution of medical marijuana in the city.

The Visalia City Council tentatively approved a new ordinance this week that would restrict marijuana distributors to designated areas. The new law would also regulate production, distribution and use of marijuana for medical purposes.

There's only one medical marijuana distributor in Visalia now, but officials expect more to open in the city.

The City Council is set to take a final vote on the issue on October 17th.

California law allows the use of medical marijuana, but its use remains illegal under federal law.

In June, the Supreme Court ruled federal agents can enforce federal prohibition in California and other states.
