Police are taking a “wait and see” approach to Saskatoon’s first medical marijuana dispensary. The Saskatchewan Compassion Club opened its doors on Aug. 17.

Since then, it has gained more than 20 new members daily.

The shop is not one of Health Canada’s authorized producers or dispensers of medical marijuana, meaning all sales here are illegal.

Saskatoon police Chief Clive Weighill said they are not turning a blind eye to the dispensary.

“We’ve been watching what’s going on and we’re following regulations,” explained Weighill.

“Things are really kind of up in the air with how we’re going to deal with all this right across Canada. Each province is a little different on how they’re handling it, so we’re waiting on a bit more direction from prosecutions with the province of Saskatchewan.”

Hundreds of similar shops exist across Canada, with police services turning a blind eye to the businesses.
