The Wyoming House of Representatives is set to consider a bill to decriminalize possession of up to an ounce of marijuana.
The House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday voted to advance a bill sponsored by Cheyenne Democratic Rep. James Byrd that would specify civil fines rather than jail time upon conviction of possession of up to an ounce of marijuana.
The Judiciary Committee voted to set the fines at $250 for up to a half ounce of marijuana and $500 for up to an ounce. The fines are higher than Bryd suggested.
Byrd emphasizes that marijuana is legal in several other states, including Colorado.
House Majority Floor Leader Rosie Berger, a Republican from Big Horn, says she expects the House to hold its first vote on the bill on Wednesday.
