A zoning adjustment hearing to discuss allowing a medical marijuana dispensary to go into a location at 48th Street and Warner Road was postponed due to an application error.
The dispensary was originally on the agenda for a meeting on Thursday, May 9, but the item was pushed back to May 23 when the city discovered an error in the application.
The application asked the city for a variance because of proximity to a day care center and another medical marijuana dispensary, but the surveyor for the dispensary did not catch the location's proximity to a residential area.
"There were no homes there and so when he did a search he was not able to find it," said Peter Valenzuela, chief executive officer of the Genesis Group Public Affairs, who is representing the owners of Nature's Healing Center. "It's a planned area. Homes will go there in the future but there are no homes there yet so he missed it."
Because the owners needed to add the residential variance to their application they were bumped from the May 9 agenda. They will now go on the May 23 agenda. That meeting will happen at Phoenix City Hall, 200 W. Washington St., at 1:30 p.m.
Before the zoning adjustment hearing the dispensary owners will host an open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on May 20 at the Grace Inn, 10831 S. 51st St., in the Saguaro Room of the Ahwatukee hotel. The owners of the dispensary will meet with the public, share their plans and explain their business.
Valenzuela said there's often opposition to dispensaries, but that it's mostly uninformed opposition. The owners of Nature's Healing Center hope to inform the public of exactly what their business will be like to dispel any concerns.
Letters will be going out to nearby residential groups and businesses announcing the open house. It is open to the public.
