A new CBS News poll today finds that 61 percent of Americans feel pot should be legal - up five percent from previous year - and the highest percentage ever recorded in this poll. Millennials ages 18-34 overwhelmingly support recreational marijuana by 76 percent, while those ages 35-64 all support legalization in the low 60s. Overall, about 60 percent of the respondents support recreational legalization.

Brohl said legalized marijuana delivered almost $200 million in tax revenue to Colorado coffers a year ago, and the amount of tax revenue is only projected to rise. The police chiefs said potential problems an increase in impaired driving, higher health care expenses, even an increase in homelessness.

That enthusiasm crosses all ages, genders and political demographics, according to a poll of 1,011 adults who were asked 'Should marijuana use be legal?' Sixty-five percent of people actually think that marijuana is less risky than other drugs as well, indicating increased public awareness of distinctions that marijuana advocates have been trying to draw for decades. 88% favor medical marijuana use.

The growing acceptance of legal marijuana comes as states continue to challenge the federal government's insistence that marijuana is a unsafe drug with no therapeutic value and a high potential for abuse. Fully 65 percent say marijuana is less unsafe than other drugs.

CBS's poll was conducted by phone April 11-15 and included a random sample of 1,011 US adults. Legal marijuana is heavily taxed: There's a 28% tax in Colorado and a 37% tax In Washington.

There continues to be support for allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana, even among those who oppose legalizing the drug. Sessions finds it particularly necessary to focus on marijuana usage, which is legal in one form or another in dozens of states and legal recreationally in an increasing number, while becoming beloved by moms, arthritic mutants and Olympic champions nationwide.

But a more recent and much larger state survey found that use among teens was essentially unchanged, and Brohl said the increase in hospital visits may relate to a greater willingness to admit use.
