Four pupils have been expelled from a leading Devon school after teachers discovered that students had been smoking a cannabis 'bong' between lessons.

A further two pupils at Torquay Boys' Grammar School were also excluded after the discovery of a group of Year 10 students smoking cigarettes during lunchtime led to teachers finding out that some pupils had been using a 'bong' to smoke cannabis at the school.

Headteacher Pete Lawrence said that the school had responded to the incident 'in the strongest manner' and reassured parents that it involved a small number of students.

He told DevonLive.com: "We know that Torbay itself has a significant drugs issue but as a school the safety and well-being of our students is of paramount importance and that is why we have responded to this incident in the strongest manner.

"Illegal substances have no place in our school and that is the reassurance I would wish parents to take from this regrettable incident with a small number of students."

In a letter to parents Mr Lawrence confirmed that he had spoken with the whole of Year 10 on Friday morning to remind them of the dangers of using illegal substances.

He said: "Young people are not only vulnerable to the physical effects of consuming cannabis and other drugs but are in danger of putting themselves into exposed situations when they source these substances.

"As a school we offer significant support and advice to students about making sensible choices and it is disappointing when intelligent young people nevertheless put themselves in danger.

"I am sure you will want to join us in reiterating to your son or daughter the perils of illegal drug use."

A bong is a filtration device generally used for smoking cannabis, tobacco or other herbal substances. Mr Lawrence said that the four pupils had been excluded for using an illegal substance in school while two more we excluded for handling materials.

"Turning specifically to last week's circumstances, we spent several days investigating the situation, with a view to gaining a clear and accurate picture of events," the letter added.

"It is with great sadness and regret that, as a result, I am writing to inform you that four students have been permanently excluded from TBGS for illegal substance misuse in school, with another two students receiving fixed-term exclusions for handling materials in school.

"As a school we have no control over the decisions students make when away from us, at some of the parties they attend or gatherings they join.

"However, I cannot emphasize strongly and clearly enough that there is no place in school for illegal substances and that if we become aware of such material being brought into school, decisive action will be taken to deal with those responsible.

"This letter seeks to reassure you of our continued commitment to our principal concern which remains, as always, the safety of your child."
