I posted this in the forums, but not sure if I did it in the right place, so I am blogging it too...
I got a plant about 18-20 days ago as a belated birthday present. She had grown about double her size so I knew she was going to need transplanting from the red plastic cup she started in. I transplanted her into one of those big Folger's coffee cans, (the red, plastic ones). I used Pro Mix HP grow medium for soil as it is good for root oxidation and water drainage.
The transplant took all of about 2-3 minutes and had no problems. I gave her some Superthrive, (1ml to 1 gallon Aquafina water. Aquafina has about a 7 Ph which is why I chose it) at about 6-8 total ounces. since my soil medium has no nutrients in it, I also gave her a little bit of 16-16-16 to get her some nitrogen. I used about a pinch in a 4Ph bottle of Dasani, and gave her about 4 capfuls.
I had not given her more than about two capfuls of the 16-16-16 before transplant, and she had a ton of long roots when I took her out. I think I was a little late on this, but not too late. Still, I think I might have starved her out a little trying not to burn her out.
The problem I am having: the tips of the leaves are yellowing and curling upward. It is on every level of the plant. It's not very bad, but I don't want it to get worse. I read that this can happen as the roots begin to grow and it's nothing to worry about, but the very tips have begun to shrink up and get a little brown. They are not brittle so I know it isn't because of the lights. She is otherwise very green and pretty.
I used Bayer on her to keep bugs off, as someone I know had a spider mite problem and it ended up killing his white widow plant. So I know bugs are not the problem. (I inspect every few days under and on top the leaves just to be sure).
I've also just read that smoking cigarettes around a plant is bad because it can clog up the pores of the plant and hinder gas movement to and from the plant. she is usually in a reflective box, but I had her in my room to prepare for transplant and I smoke in there. Or did until I found out it was a no-no.
I just want to know if there is anything more I can do to help her grow up to be the stinky chronic her mother was. As a newbie to growing I'm a little over-paranoid, but I need the plant for medical reasons and I am not rich by any means.
I will toss up some before and after pics I took today before and after I transplanted her. Hopefully I'm doing good by her, but if not I want to know what I can do to be a better parent to her.
thanks for any help you can give me!![Thank You :thanks: :thanks:](/community/styles/420style/smilies/thank-you-420.gif)
Before the transplant. you can see she is curling up and yellowing on the upper right leaf.
This was minutes after the transplant. Sorry it's so blurry..it was done with a blackberry. It also looks like one might have necrosis on the bottom left, but it isn't. I freaked on this at first, but it was just a shadow from the curling. But you could see the dark spot on the leaf with the naked eye, but luckily it was just an optical illusion.![All Good :allgood: :allgood:](/community/styles/420style/smilies/allgood.gif)
