On Wednesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol agents arrested Lorena Atienza, a Calexico resident, while attempting to smuggle 41 pounds of marijuana through the Highway 86 Border Patrol Checkpoint.

A 2006 silver Toyota Avalon drove into the primary checkpoint and underwent an initial inspection.

The inspecting agent referred the vehicle to secondary for further inspection. In secondary, a Border Patrol K-9 alerted to the trunk area. Portable x-ray technology helped find the location of the marijuana. A search resulted in the discovery of 17 packages of marijuana hidden in the Avalon’s spare tire.

A total of 41 pounds of marijuana was seized, with a value of $32,480.

The 42 year-old driver, a naturalized U.S. Citizen, was turned over to the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force along with her vehicle and the marijuana.
