Police seized more than 50,000 marijuana plants and 207 kilograms of bulk marijuana buds during "Project Sabot," a one-month annual police crackdown in the National Capital Region.

The 51,031 plants were located using aerial patrols targeting outdoor marijuana grow operations between Aug. 22 and Sept. 27, said an RCMP news release issued Friday.

The Department of National Defence, the "A" division of the the RCMP drug section, the Quebec and Ontario provincial police forces and the des Collines municipal police were all involved in the project.

The release said the seizures are intended to reduce risks associated with drug use and eliminate profits from marijuana sales that are used to finance criminal activities.
