Don't go by ambers on the leaves, they will mature faster and not give you a reliable estimate. Take some shots of the buds and go by the average.
Even if the buds are really amber they aren't ruined. It'll just be a heavy stone which some people like. I do...

Looks good actually. Just amber trichomes, which like above said, makes for a more stoney high. Besides that, they are still good for smoking.
I agree your buddy is an idiot! But they still look fine if you enjoy couch sitting.
