Despite the bungle, however, Victoria Police says it has no intention of ending the drug-testing system because false readings were "extremely rare", The Geelong Advertiser reports.

Rory Lalor, of Newtown, was adamant he did not have marijuana in his system when he tested positive two months ago during a random drug test.

In a bid to clear his name, Mr Lalor paid $115 for an independent test that cleared him of having cannabis in his system.

Mr Lalor said he contacted police this week to find out the result after he did not receive a letter in the mail.

"They said I am innocent. They did the test and I was negative," he said.
