Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell announced the sheriff's office will be cracking down on illegal marijuana grows, starting January 1.

"Those illegal grows are often run by cartels and organizations that are criminal in nature, and they have no more room in this county," Mikesell said.

This is a newer problem for the county, and one the last administration wasn't particularly focused on.

"It's a problem across the state; it's an unintended consequence of marijuana," he said.

He said the office will be relying on tips from the community to begin many of their investigations.

"If you see something, say something," Mikesell said. "We have a tip line where you can remain anonymous. And this community has been great -- they are aware and they let us know what they see."

He said it's important to share your tips because these grows are a danger to everyone.

"They bring increased crime, thefts, and trafficking," Mikesell said.

Even though the campaign doesn't officially start until January 1, the sheriff's office is already preparing.

Commander Greg Couch said community tips have already led to several investigations.

"We already had surveillance conducted on 30-50 grows in the county," he said.

The goal is to take down one grow every two weeks.

"We are coming for these folks," Sheriff Mikesell said. "What I'd like the community to know is: partner with us and let us know where they're at and we'll make sure to find them."
