It's tough for kids to play flag football without the proper equipment, but thanks to a donation, the Boys and Girls Club of the Diablo Valley now has the right gear to play.

Robert Martin, of the Collective Wellness of California, donated two new Hewlett Packard computers, footballs, flag football gear and rubber balls that can be used for kickball or dodge ball.

"I feel very great and fortunate to have been chosen to be the recipients of these gifts," Boys & Girls Club Chief Professional Officer and CEO, Club Tuong Truong said.

There were over 115 kids present at the Boys and Girls Club Thursday afternoon when Martin presented the gifts to the children.

"We are here to support the kids and we are glad to give something meaningful to them, something they can use," Martin said.

Martin said that the Collective Wellness of California is planning to keep working with the Boys & Girls Club of the Diablo Valley and is hoping to give larger donations in the future.

"The children's faces say it all," Martin said.

Martin and the Collective Wellness of California looked into several different groups that they thought they wanted to donate to and decided upon the Boys & Girls Club of the Diablo Valley because of how many kids they help.

"We thought they were a worthy club. It goes directly to the children, and they do a lot more for kids than the Boys & Girls Club from when I was a kid."

Over the past year-and-a-half, Martin and the Collective Wellness of California have been working and meeting with Martinez community members, business owners and citizens bringing awareness to the medical marijuana industry. The members of the Collective Wellness of California are trying to get a permit to open a dispensary in Martinez.

"We aren't going to be anything other than what we are," Martin said.

Martin said the Collective Wellness of California, which is based in San Ramon and has a laboratory in Oakland, wants to become a part of the Martinez community.

"Martinez would become the dispensary. We like Martinez, and the downtown area is beautiful," Martin said.

Part of the purpose of the organization is to get rules passed that would help oversee the production and distribution of medical cannabis so patients are guaranteed quality, safe medication.

"We will go anywhere in Martinez, all we need is a permit," Martin said.

The donation by Collective Wellness of California is just the beginning of a relationship with the Boys & Girls Club of the Diablo Valley.

"It was a minimum gesture. If we get our permit, part of our proceeds will go to the Boys & Girls Club of the Diablo Valley," Martin said.

In June, the Boys & Girls Club of the Diablo Valley received a $1,100 check from the Martinez Chamber of Commerce after the chamber hosted the Martinis on the Plaza festival with the Boys & Girls Club as the beneficiary.
