Green Labs is on a roll. Even though recreational marijuana is legal in Colorado, safe havens where people can consume cannabis are few and far between. But Green Labs found a solution: an array of cool, cannabis-themed classes each week, including this Saturday's Sushi and Joint Rolling course. Yes, you can learn how to roll your own - both sushi and joints - while drinking beer or sake, enjoying the sunshine on an enclosed patio, and socializing with a small group of like-minded folks.
Says Sushi and Joint Rolling creator Brett Davis, "Our goal is to bring a high-class experience within the industry that doesn't involve a bar, something unconventional. We really just want to educate the public on cannabis topics. Some are serious, like the importance of growing organically, and others are just mean to be fun, like Sushi and Joint Rolling. I mean, come on, where else can you spend an afternoon learning how to roll joints and sushi? It's a riot." Other classes at Green Labs include Coffee and Cannabis pairing, Healthy Honeys Yoga and the popular Puff, Pass, Paint with Heidi Keyes.
We attended the initial Sushi and Joint Rolling class earlier this spring. The airy space of Green Labs beckoned with an open kitchen and lounge complete with a small bar with sake and beer options, plus that private outdoor patio. Hapa Sushi chef Alejandro Bugarin, who has been rolling sushi for almost fifteen years, instructed us in how to roll both fish and vegetarian versions. The cannabis sponsor and joint-rolling expert this was Stephen Spinosa, vice president of Dispensary Operations at Good Chemistry. With charm to match their knowledge, members of the Good Chemistry team lead a group of transplants new to Denver as well as locals in a crash course in joint-rolling, and the group roareed with laughter when one excited student yelled, "I forgot to lick it!"
But as we all learned, practice makes perfect.
The Sushi and Joint Rolling class costs $65, which includes sushi, weed and booze - which makes this feel about as close to "free weed" as you can get. If given the option, try your hand at rolling sushi before you roll a joint, as smoking cannabis first can make sushi rolling a challenge.
