what do i do about compacted soil? seems really damp tho

Add some perlite, or vermiculite.

You need to let the soil dry out, and then improve soil condition with some manure and mulch, and a sprinkle of dolomite to sweeten the soil. The dolomite will cause fine soil particles to flocculate, which improves texture and breathability of soil. Garden worms will then do the rest for you. The trick is to have dryer soil at all costs, or the worms and your plant will not thrive.
