PORT ALLEN, LA (WAFB) - In what is being called the biggest drug busts made one sheriff's watch, deputies found over $1 million worth of marijuana inside a crane tire during a traffic stop Monday night on Interstate 10. The driver of the work truck it was located in was arrested.
West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Mike Cazes stood next to a pile of marijuana almost as tall as he is and more than three times his weight as he described the bust.
Cazes said his interstate interdiction team spotted an unmarked work truck heading east on I-10. Narcotics agents later found the huge stash.
"I would never dream you could fit this much in a crane tire," Cazes stated. "It was 500 pounds of marijuana inside that tire, with the rim on it."
Just to give a better visual of how big the tire really is one of the agents was able to get inside after all the dope was taken out. Detectives believe Jose Antonio Castellar Lugo was taking the drugs to Orlando, FL.
Cazes explained how the markings on the individually-wrapped packages usually mean they are spoken for.
"They have several indicators of different buyers or dealers or whoever. They didn't get their package," he said.
While the sheriff is proud of his team for having a good eye and putting a stop to this dangerous delivery, he can't help but wonder how many more loads crossed through West Baton Rouge that night while his agents were tackling this one.
He has no doubt, though, eventually his guys will catch up with them.
"You are taking a risk when you come to my parish because we are out there. We will watch you," he added.
The West Baton Rouge Interdiction Team has been working hard. Cazes said 3,700 hits of synthetic marijuana were taken off the streets two weeks ago.
Legislators passed a law during the last session banning the substance.
