Dirtfarmer's 2010 (30 feet,6 plants,24lbs)

Well here we go again. Growing 4 great white shark, and 2 others.

I talked last year about my soil having lots of worms. well here is some shovels fulls. Millions of small earth worms that will grow big. This year I am not planting along that other fence. I am planting down my yard using the arborvidas for protection. The sun goes right over my plant line.

This year I am shooting for 6 plants and 24lbs in about 30 feet of space.

The work starts. been a wet spring in the PAC. NW so ya a late start this year.

So holes that size'll support big timber like ya had last year? They seem kinda small from the pictures.

I'm subscribed and stoked!

Hey dirtfarmer, I thought you were gone! Nice to see a new grow, how many pounds did you get out of the old grow, if you can tell us here?

I'd like to put a few plants outside, but where I live now, it'd be hard to find a space where others won't find them.

Where I used to live, in Pennsylvania, it'd be EASY to have a few plants scattered here and there out in the woods.

Apparently Dirtfarmer's plants have the whole Earth to spread their roots into. Those holes are just a place for his dixie cups.

Gotta love Oregon. :)

I have a different prob with a desert climate. Any desert growers make sure you add compost or lots of organic stuff to the holes. Desert soil drains great but you need some organics to help hold some water.

I am somewhat isolated but I plant really tall types of sunflowers around and interspaced with my ladies. It gives 4 benifits. Sunflowers help screen the garden, provide inexpensive shade in harsh desert conditions, break up strong wind that can damabe the ladies and attract benificial predatory insects.

Three years growing and exactly zero insect problems.

What bugs do they attract?

The following plants will help attract insects that prey on some of the insects that like to eat our girls: The information was from grinningplanet.com

Pests: Whiteflies, aphids, thrip, spider mites.
Predatory insect: Dicyphus.
Plants that will attract this:

1. Foxglove. The flowers attract the predators, but this does not flower until the second year. Probably better to get one from a garden center.

2. Mullein. This plant attracts the beneficial insects, but also is well known for being a smoking herb. It is actually known to prevent and treat pulmonary problems, as well as useful as a remedy for cough when smoked. It is generally flavorless when smoked, and if smoked with your weed, will almost nullify any coughing from the hit. Excellent for use in a six-footer.

Pests: Thrips, spidermites, fungus gnats.
Predatory insect: Beneficial mites.
Plants to attract these:

1. Shasta Daisy

2. Sunflower

LOL then you can try to explain it. Although my holes are a little smaller but deeper this year. I used 2 bags per hole with a lot of perlite.

I will also cut the grass back from the holes some for the roots spread good on top.

My thinking on the size of my holes

We all know that just fox farms soil in a 2x2x2 hole will not do what happend last year. So last year I planted in these holes with fox farms soil with 40% perlite. The fox farms soil and the perlite made my plants build a large root ball pretty fast. When that root ball hit my backyard soil everything exploded beyond even stoner wishing. So the key to my thinking is the backyard soil. These small holes will build my root ball and get into the backyard soil asap. even my Veggies I posted in my thread were huge. I had 2.5lbs tomatoes and 3 foot wide Sunflower heads we very little ferts.

Could you also try to explain why I got zero yellow leafs thru the whole grow? That was a hard one and still have no answer.

I have no proof about what I just said. But it is the only logical way I can explain it.

I am doing everything the same but given the plants much more room. And the holes are about 6" smaller this year.

I will post pics soon.

I did make the holes a little bigger than the first pics for I wanted to use 2 bags per hole. They are bigger but not by much. Also I wanted to just plant right into my backyard soil but I got scared to change things up to much. Makes me wonder if I could have better results without the fox farm soil. Say backyard soil and perlite? It's not to late??? what do you think? Stick to my guns and get close to 4lbs again. Or play around with one plant and risk lower or higher results?????? It's a tuff deciding when your talking perhaps lbs per plant.

Now just amagine the 3 plants in my avatar spread out with room to grow? Last year they were so crowded that it was like growing 1/2 plants. And the plant in the middle just had large colas with no sides. Also a half plant over by the fence for the fence block half the plant. I have really good feeling that this year may even bring more than 24lbs for they can strectch there legs all they want. Also do not forget all the plants but one were tied over multible times and still got 12 feet tall. This year is going to be sweet. Those arborvidas are about 20 feet plus. I am not growing over by the fence this year. I learned my lesson last year. This year they can do what they want. I will figure out a way to cover them when the rain comes. It may take a week of staring and pondering but I will figure a cover out. Also going to prune some this year. Last year I was a pussy when it came to pruning.

17lbs from 4 plants in the ground and 2 in totes. 17lbs total

Here is a good pic of what I am talking about. If you look close there is 3 plants in the ball. Look close and you can see how I was growing 1/2 plants. This year they will stretch there legs. I could get way more than I got last year if all goes right.

with lots of room who knows whats going to happen this year. Last year was like 1/2 plants and then just a top of a plant. There was lots of pop corn inside this ball of plants.

was a big fan last year. Excited to see what you do this year.

What do you do about security? Last year you had that ripper come by... you mention you had alarms that alerted you. Could you maybe talk a little more about a decent security system? There are times when my eyes are not on the plants, but I am always within ear shot.

wondering through Lowes type stores, I have found little motion detector alarms, and motion lights and such. Wonder how well these work, or if you had something more involved?

Anyway... subscribed.
