An Elgin man has been indicted for his role in an alleged marijuana trafficking operation, according to the Kane County State's Attorney's Office.

Mario Hernandez, 36, of the 700 block of South Street, Elgin, was indicted Friday by a Kane County grand jury on one count of cannabis trafficking, a Class X felony; one count of unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, a Class 3 felony; and one count of unlawful possession of cannabis, a Class 4 felony.

According to the authorities, Kane County sheriff's deputies conducted a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Impala traveling east on Interstate 88 at Route 31 in North Aurora about 8:15 a.m. Jan. 14.

During the stop, sheriff's deputies determined the vehicle, registered in the state of Oregon, was heading to the Chicago area. A search of the trunk turned up 56 pounds of high-grade marijuana with a street value of more than $1 million, authorities said.

The Impala's driver, Pablo Galeana-Rueda, 34 of Aberdeen Wash., and the passenger, Jose I. Hernandez-Calderon, 41, of Santa Rosa, Calif., were taken into custody. Each was charged with one count of cannabis trafficking, a Class X felony; one count of unlawful possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis with intent to deliver, a Class X felony; and one count of possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis, a Class 1 felony.

Galeana-Rueda and Hernandez-Calderon appeared Jan. 15 in Kane County bond court, where their bail was set at $1 million each. Both men remain in custody at the Kane County jail. The next court appearance for each is set for 9 a.m. Feb. 16 in Courtroom 305 in front of Associate Judge T. Jordan Gallagher for a status hearing.

Information obtained during the investigation led deputies to Hernandez's residence in Elgin, where they found a pound of marijuana, according to sheriff's police. Hernandez initially was charged with one count of unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, a Class 3 felony; one count of unlawful possession of cannabis, a Class 4 felony; and one count of unlawful calculated criminal cannabis conspiracy, a Class 3 felony.

Hernandez appeared in Kane County bond court Jan. 19, where his bail was set at $2 million and he was remanded to custody at the county jail.

Friday's indictment states that Hernandez caused more than 2,500 grams of marijuana to be brought to Illinois with the intent to deliver; that he possessed, with the intent to deliver to another, more than 30 grams but not more than 500 grams of marijuana; and that he possessed more than 30 grams but not more than 500 grams of marijuana.

Hernandez remains in custody at the Kane County jail. His next court appearance is set for Feb. 9.

Each defendant faces a sentence of between 12 and 60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections if convicted of the trafficking charge, which is the most serious, the state's attorney's office said.

Galeana-Rueda and Hernandez-Calderon have not yet had their cases presented to the grand jury.

Thats got to be a bit embelished. 56 pounds over a mill. Just bought an ounce of killer nuggets in Chicago for less than $ 400. The stuff stunk so bad it made me nervous that if i got pulled over I would be sitting in the pokey. That equates to over $1000 an ounce.
