COOK COUNTY -- A Florida man was ordered held in lieu of $500,000 bond this week after he was arrested in the south suburbs while driving a truck that was allegedly loaded with more than 2 1/2 tons of marijuana.

Juan Gutierrez, 39, of Tampa was scheduled to appear Feb. 15 for a preliminary hearing, said Cook County Sheriff's police spokeswoman Penny Mateck.

At about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, an undercover sheriff's police officer assigned to a narcotics task force was driving north on Interstate Highway 57 near Country Club Hills when he "saw a trucker whose behavior was inconsistent with normal trucking practices," Mateck said.

She would not elaborate.

A search of the truck found six pallets loaded with 5,217 pounds of shrink-wrapped marijuana, she said.

Gutierrez, a Cuban national, told investigators he drove to Houston to pick up the load, and was told to deliver it to a man on the South Side of Chicago.

Mateck said no other arrests have been made in connection with the seizure, but said the investigation is ongoing and local officials are working with Texas authorities.
