Footprints

Simple question I hope so here goes. When hanging lights let's say in a 4x8 area using bulb style lights (HID) do you get a better footprint having the bulbs turned long ways running parallel with the 8 foot length, or having the bulb facing from front to back. I do have two hoods and it's easier to run them long ways because of the cool tubes. I would rather have even lighting intensity than an easy setup.

It would only make a difference if the size was 8×3 , then I would choose the other as bulbs deliver less light out of the ends.
But which ever way you choose in a 8×4,you're asking the light to cover a 4×4 each , so doesn't matter either way.so I would go for the easiest , straight line.

I'd assume that reflector design and placement would be at least as important as bulb orientation (assuming they're parallel to the floor).
