Local police detained 1992 Olympic wrestling champion Péter Farkas in an Andorra hotel on Saturday night, Budapest Police chief Gábor Tóth announced on Sunday.

Tóth said Hungarian police learned about a month ago that Farkas had been staying in Valencia, Spain.

Farkas, together with his younger brother Károly and an associate were convicted for running the largest marijuana plantation discovered in Hungary, at the home of Farkas’s mother in the 17th District.

Farkas fled a Budapest courtroom in November of last year after his sentence was read out. His five-year prison term was raised to seven years by a court on December 12.

Farkas may have been found out via his internet connection, as he kept in touch with several people in Hungary, including the woman he had been living with. He wanted to meet her in Vienna during the Christmas holidays, but changed his mind because of the proximity of the border. They instead met in Andorra.

Police discovered that Farkas had checked into an Andorra hotel using his younger brother’s driver's licence, and this is how he was caught at 11.30 p.m. on December 26. Hungarian police contacted Andorra police via the French embassy, Tóth said.

Farkas surrendered without putting up any resistance. He will reportedly be brought back to Hungary in a month or two.

As well as winning an Olympic gold medal, Farkas was twice a world champion in Greco-Roman wrestling.

His case prompted Parliament to recently pass an amendment according to which no Olympic medal winner – nor his coach or widow – may receive a life annuity from the state if he or she is convicted of a crime.
