Wattage isn't the best indicator of what a grower needs to cover an area with LEDs, But its the simpliest form to use. I use Par/Watts and PPFD to rate fixtures. LEDs have come along way over the last few years. 1watt/3watt/5watt and now the Single High Power Air Cooled COBs have arrived and Now the Intensity/Coverage area is now there to IMO Compete with MH/HPS in Commercial Ops. The Key is to space the Emitters out evenly for better and more even coverage across the entire canopy. A grower gets what he pays for to. Cree/Bridgelux are Tops and the ROI as early 60days for the advanced cultivators. 1 to 1.75 gpw depending on exp.
Here is a 2ft7in x 4ft9in area and covered by 440watts CXB3590/Vero29

Wattage and PPFD should come later on when deciding. 1st three factors one should look at in order are Case Size, (Flower)Coverage area then Intensity/Opticals.
Basically what I am trying to say is wattage means very little with 2015/2016LEDFixtures
I base all my opinions on working knowledge
