HPs/MH question

How far away does a 400w hps light have to be from the plants? Does HPS and MH have different lengths of how far away it has to be? Thanks for teh help

12inches is perfect you could have ur light closer than that but then you might stress your plants out and cause yellowing so for me its not worth it for the extra lumens so hang it up at 12inches n play it safe your plant will love you for it!

I use a 400W HPS and from what I've read the recommended distance is 20 inches to be safe. I have a fan hanging upside down from my reflector hood blowing across the light(just beneath) this lets me get my plants within about 12 inches with no sign of heat stress, but I wouldn't put it this close without the fan.
