Japan declined to press charges against a Marine caught smoking marijuana in a barracks last month at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, the Marine Corps said Friday.
The Corps is now investigating the case and will decide whether to charge the private first class, said base spokesman Master Gunnery Sgt. John Cordero.
The 21-year-old servicemember was found smoking pot and in possession of about 3.2 grams of it in the barracks on the morning of June 8, according to a report released by the Organized Criminal Control Division of the Iwakuni police department.
He was arrested by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and was confined to the air station pending an investigation.
The Marine admitted to the marijuana offenses, according to Iwakuni police.
His name was not released by the U.S. military or Japanese authorities.
Iwakuni police were notified shortly after the arrest. Japan had primary jurisdiction in the matter even though it occurred on a U.S. military base, police said.
The case was passed June 23 to the Yamaguchi prefecture prosecutor’s office, which decided last week not to pursue charges, Cordero said.
"The matter is being investigated" by the Marine Corps, he said.
