JJ Bones' Hydro Green Cush Grow Journal - 2012

Well soon after my soil grow finished up, my partner and I parted ways, so now this grow will be all me.

I went with all same equipment, except this time decided to go with hydro, specifically the General Hydroponics Aeroflo 20 site system. Which is simply an NFT system.

Equipment List -

Growlab 145L
Sunspot 8 - 2
1000w Quantum Ballast - 2
1000w Digilux MH vs 1000w Interlux MH (Interlux whooped ass)
1000w Plantmax HPS vs 1000w Interlux HPS
Max Fan 6"
Phresh Filter 6"x12" 400 CFM Carbon Filter
Can Fan 6" HO
Danby 12,000 BTU A/C
Sunleaves 60 pint Dehumidifier
GH Aeroflo 20 site
Holmes Oscillating Clip-On Fan
Air King Oscillating Clip-On Fan

Fertilizer -

House & Garden Aqua Flakes A/B
Drip Clean
Rootastic
SN-14 (foliar)
Cali Magic
Hygrozyme

I decided to SCRog again, with the hydro to see how it would work out. I have another room right now that also has Green Cush and it is quite a vigorous growing strain, takes up a shit-ton of water as well, heavy drinker.

Just flipped to flower a few days ago, so lets get this journal caught up! :thumb:

A few things got changed up for this grow, aside from soil to hydro. I switched my fan for my air-cooled hoods to push instead of pull. I understand pulling is typically better, however I chose to push for two reasons: it helps prevent smell, it keeps the fan from getting super hot.

I also took my carbon filter down from hanging on the roof of the tent, and placed in the opposite corner as my A/C and dehumidifier. I had it above the A/C before in order to catch cold air and shoot the other side. This time I moved on the opposite end, to pull stale air from the far side and spit it over to the A/C which is shooting air the opposite direction.

Besides that all is the same...stayed at 500w (per light) entire time.

you have a great set up bro!! very clean and tidy!! im gonna be following ya with this and look forward to seeing the result with the nft using the scrog method! all the best and good luck!

Subbed!! Looking forward to following all these new adventures. Very interested in all these different hydro setups. Mine is an extremely basic flood n drain with rockwoll just amazing how many different options is hydro growers have! I'd like to incorporate all of them lol!

Edit: excuse my newbness but what exactly does NFT stand for?

No reason to excuse newbness, good man! We all have to start somewhere. NFT stands for Nutrient Film Technique.

I will update further once I get my notes off my whiteboard.

It should also be noted I am testing grow bulbs. For veg I had Digilux vs Interlux, and I have to be honest the results were interesting. Interlux whooped ass, Digilux was no where near as good.

In flower I am testing Plantmax vs Interlux, so far it's pretty even.

Update!

Just started week 6 for this grow, and I update once my calendar whiteboard is filled. Time to erase the board, time to place that data here! FYI: I put my notes, then pictures from the days the notes were taken, or pics that are closest to the notes date. Unfortunately there are times when I have more notes then pics.

So far it's all smooth, simple system, working great for me. Only thing that is shitty is my bill right now, as I'm not on the CARE program, they're taking their sweet time to update my status or even update me on my application, been about 4-5 weeks now...

I had a couple worrisome days where we hit 100 degree weather here. I was a bit cheap in that I didn't insulate my grow area (which I recommend) so I was at work worrying about how my res temp was doing. Came on lunch one day and saw it was about 77 degrees which is too high. I put some ice in and it went down to about 65, next day had same issue but just said screw it. Important lesson is if you want to have full control, spring for a chiller in hydro. Overall it's all good for now, added Hygrozyme in last res change so it should help balance any possible damage from the hot water. Enough ranting :bongrip:, here's my update:

August 31st - Cleaned the bottom of the plants one last time, added 3 1/2 gallons of water, pH 5.8, 860 PPM

September 1st - Sprayed SNS 217

September 3rd - Res change, 7ml/gal base, pH 5.8, 830 PPM, 72 degree H2O

September 4th - Changed bulbs, HPS (plantmax vs interlux) [week 2 into flower]

September 5th - Added 3 gallons of water, 675 PPM, pH 5.8

September 7th - Added 3 gallons, pH 6.0, PPM 530

September 9th - Added 3 gallons, SNS 217 spray, pH 6.0, PPM 550, replaced CO2 pads with new ones

September 10th - Res change, PPM 775, pH 5.9, 72 degree H2O, noticed very slight nute burn, reduced to 6.5ml/gal base

September 12th - Added 4 gallons, pH 5.9, PPM 480, Temp 72

September 15th - "" pH 6.0, PPM 453, Temp 70

September 17th - Res change, first time adding Crystal Burst, pH 6.1, PPM 800, Temp 71

September 19th - Add 3 gal, pH 6.0, PPM 750, 72 degrees

September 21st - Add 3 gal, ph 5.9, PPM 675, 72 degrees

September 23rd - Add 3 gal, 5.5 ph, 400 PPM

September 25th - Res change, 6.1 pH, 1000 PPM, 6.5ml/gal, increased ballasts to 750w [noticed Crystal Burst working heavy, first thought I had PM, then looked close and was like damn!] {week 5}

September 27th - Add 3 1/2 gal, 800 PPM, 6.0 ph, 73 degree water

September 28th - Noticed fantastic results with the Crystal Burst, crazy trich production, even trich's on the stems of FAN LEAVES, crazy shit.

September 29th - Added 4 gal, 400 PPM (didn't write ppm because it must have been on dot as I added dehumidifier water which is always spot on) [this is my guess as to why it didn't get written]

October 1st - 101 degree weather, added ice to res during dark cycle (used green led bulb), water was 77 degrees, dropped it to 65 degree avg

October 2nd - Res change, added liquid carboload, bloombastic, stopped CB, replaced co2 pads, ph 6.2 ppm 740, 7ml/gal base

Flowers look very small to me for being so far. This is known as a 9 weeker, so I'm hoping for a beast mode these next two weeks. Thinking it could be the fact of being on 500w the entire time. Everything else is great as far as conditions. I've grown this strain with HID, LED, and T5 so kinda scratching my head. First time for NFT too, so maybe I should have bumped up PPM.

I'll be increasing bloombastic these next two weeks to see if that helps out.

Was shooting the shit with a fellow grower/cannabis friend and he helped me realize I'm using too low of PPM. Which has the be the only thing. It makes sense, I'm used to my soil grows where I don't like to get too high in PPM because usually the soil is rich.

Next time I will get to 1200-1400 PPM

Yep .... gonna have to watch this one ......

Nice set up man good job so far REPS!

Thanks you guys, appreciate the positive vibes. I'm just bummed that the buds are so damn small! I've grown this strain before and never had this issue. First time doing it in hydro, and first time I've messed with hydro in a lil while, next run with this system will be fantastic, I can guarantee that.

We'll see how the next two weeks shape up.

How did this grow turn out?

We would love to be updated with some pictures and info!

How about posting a 420 Strain Review?
