what types of lights can i use/not use to grow? Are certain types of bulbs just completely inaffective?

use flourescent lights, dont use any lights that give off heat, i learned my lesson doing that, i had one so hot that it melted my plant, not just killed MELTED. one of those halogens, so just get some flouros.

i wanna say 75 watt non flourescent ones are the average ones in houses.

house 75 w don't do anything to plants. If your using that you might as well place it in a well. Yeah flouros are the best, soft cool white long bulbs.

I have a bulb thats used to warm up my brothers gecko.. uses UVA rays would that work?

Get some HPSs or fluoros or HIDs, nothin else man.

Altogether i'm currently using about 175 watts of red/blue and white fluro's, it's working quite well.

yeah i would recomend an hps light and ballest from inside sun hps are the best lights. LED, halogen and black lights do not work. flouresnts are good too
