Malaysian Court Sentences Thai Man To Hang For Drug Trafficking

Kuala Lumpur - A Malaysian court has sentenced a Thai national to death by hanging after he was found guilty of trafficking more than 17 kilograms of cannabis four years ago, a news report said Thursday. The high court in the north-eastern state of Kelantan found 44-year-old Mahamad Che Soh guilty of attempting to sell the drugs when he was caught in 2005 in front of a local restaurant, the official Bernama news agency reported.

Despite Malaysia's tough drug laws, which make it mandatory for convicted drug traffickers to face the death sentence, trafficking and drug abuse is on the rise.

Every year, hundreds of prisoners are sent to the gallows for crimes ranging from drug trafficking to murder.
