Ghana - The Tema Circuit Court on Thursday, sentenced a 38-year old labourer, Sulley Bawa, to three years imprisonment for smoking Indian hemp.

The convict, who pleaded not guilty to two counts of possessing and smoking Indian hemp, was found guilty.

Mrs Laurenda Owusu, the Presiding Judge, said the prosecution proved its case beyond all reasonable doubts that the convict actually committed the crime.

Police Chief Inspector Adolphus Otchere had earlier told the court that, on May 25 2009, a team of policemen mounted an operation in the Tema Metropolis to bring down criminal activities.

He said around the GHACEM area, the convict was seen smoking a wrapper of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The prosecution said, the convict was arrested and handed over to the Railway and Ports branch of the Criminal Investigative Department of the Police for investigation.

Chief Inspector Otchere said, the convict admitted the offence in his caution statement.
