Police are looking for thief who attempted to steal medical marijuana from a provider in Salem early Monday morning.

The homeowner, a licensed medical marijuana provider, recently installed surveillance cameras at his home in southeast Salem.

The cameras showed a man chopping down several marijuana plants with a meat cleaver and handing the branches over the fence.

The homeowner, who requested to remain anonymous, said the man cut through barbed wire to get into his backyard.

Police said the homeowner returned home after a call from his alarm company and he chased down the thief’s accomplice, later identified as 51-year-old Michael Cormier.

“I just chased him through the alley, caught up to him in the neighbor’s yard and held him in a headlock as long as I could,” said the homeowner.

Police said the homeowner was stabbed three times during the struggle.

Cormier was taken into custody, but the man on the surveillance video remains at large.

The man is described as white, 5 feet 7 inches tall and around 155 pounds with short hair and a thin mustache. He was last seen wearing a baseball cap.

The homeowner said he grows marijuana for several people in the Salem area who use the drug to treat serious medical conditions.
