Ron Paul For Medical Marijuana Legalization: Five Highlights Of 2011

Ron Paul, a presidential candidate and a Republican Congressman, along with Barney Frank, former chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, has already called for an act to legalize medical marijuana in the United States. He claims the substance can help cure or, at the least, offer painkilling options for patients suffering from diseases.

There were several highs and lows, in legal matters surrounding the use and possession of the substance, all through last year. Here are the top 5 highlights...

5. Connecticut and Arkansas Lower Fines for Cannabis Possession: Gov. Dan Malloy, on June 30, signed a legislation decriminalizing marijuana in Connecticut and making the possession of under a half-ounce punishable only by a fine of $150. Meanwhile, in Arkansas, Gov. Mike Beebe signed a legislation that would relax the penalty for possessing up to four ounces of marijuana (previously punishable by up to a year in jail, along with a $1,000 fine). Judges will now punish first-time offenders with a year's probation.

4. Bill Introduced in Congress: Congressmen Ron Paul and Barney Frank introduced a bill that would let states decide their own marijuana policies without federal intrusion; this was not just about medical marijuana policies. The Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) - a cannabis advocacy organization in the United States - has lobbied Congress for five years to initiate this legislation, which MPP helped to draft. At least 21 House members are sponsoring this legislation, as of today.

3. Medical Marijuana Laws Implemented and Expanded by New Mexico, New Jersey, Maine and D.C. : Maine's Health Department issued eight dispensary licenses in 2010, going by a ballot initiative that was approved of by 59 percent of Maine voters in November 2009. All but one of the dispensaries has opened. Meanwhile, in New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie held a news conference on July 19, where he said he didn't believe New Jersey dispensaries would be targeted under federal law, and, as a result, six dispensaries will open in the state. In New Mexico, the number of dispensaries increased from 17 to 25. The D.C. government, on its part, launched an application process that will result in 10 growers and five dispensaries being licensed in the nation's capital by April.

2. World leaders and Their Views: The "Global Commission on Drug Policy", on June 2, announced its support for the drug. This was also seen as a way of rejecting former U.S. President, Richard Nixon, and his launch of the modern drug war some 40 years ago. Eminent personalities such as former United Nations General Secretary and British businessman Richard Branson endorsed the decriminalization of marijuana. This generated huge waves of positive media coverage in the U.S. and across the world.

1. Congress Turns against Anti-Drug Campaign: The Congress and former U.S. President Bill Clinton, in 1998, passed a law creating the "National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign," which received an average of $186 million out of taxpayer money, annually, over its first five years. The pro-use organization, MPP, has been lobbying Congress this past decade, to eliminate the program. In 2012, the program received only $35 million in funds. On Dec. 23, Congress and President Obama eliminated funding for the ads in 2012.

I have changed to the Libertarian Party. The Dems and GOP have united into one party. We need a stronger third party and I encourage everyone to vote Ron Paul. He has stuck to the constitution all his political career, never veering from it.
Thanks to John McCain (R), Carl Levin (D) and Barack Obama, we now have lost our rights for a guaranteed trial. Under the new NDAA law, YOU can be arrested for anything THEY feel like labeling you with that causes fear to the ignorant or brainwashed. You can be locked up for life and/or tortured and nobody will know anything about you.

Vote RON PAUL and vote straight Libertarian.

"All but one of the dispensaries has opened."

Im not sure, but i dont think this is correct. They were supposed to be open by now, but most of the ones from the california group are still not open last i knew. The ones that are are rationing meds already because of shortage of product.

Im with you. Its really been nothing but the same the last few decades glossed over as change. I voted for Obama but will gladly vote for Paul. People need to send a message. No longer can we vote based on who we think the winner will be rather then who deserves to be president. Tired of folks voting based on the R or D in front of a candidates name. Tired of the R's and D's making to harder and harder for a 3rd party to emerge to challenge them.

Ron Paul What...?

Beware of throwing out the baby w/ the bath water. Ron Paul is a libertarian (and fits in well w/ the GOP). Just because Ron has not pounced negatively all over the marijuana issue doesn't mean he will do anything directly for the cause. Ron Paul only said he "would get the federal government out of the legalizing all those substances" but he is opposed to drugs such as marijuana. You may wonder how can he say that? Because of liberty. Just because he sounds in favor of marijuana does not mean this is good for marijuana and our country. Libertarians don't believe in levying taxes even to build roads & infrastructure but believe it should be up the the free market. (How often does the market build our roads? Healthcare, education, etc? . ) The ethical-operative value that matters to Ron is 'liberty' meaning the right of the individual is left alone for others to govern. Ron Paul believes in a government that has no social responsibility but w/ a government that maintains law and order including the protection of private property under the word "liberty" which in turn frees him from any moral responsibility to social programs etc. check out "The Price of Civilization by Jeff Sachs.
Ron Paul sounds like everybody's grandfather. I like the way he stumbles thru the course. I feel secure w/ him because of his mannerism knowing I do not have to watch out for a tricky move. Well watch out.

Thanks for your reasoned view of Ron Paul. It is problematic to vote on a single issue, particularly when what is actually being said by the candidate only partially suggests that he might, in certain circumstances, support your position.

Yet, I know there is a hunger to hear any politician actually say something reasonable about cannabis.

I believe the change on this will come from the people, through voter initiatives such as Regulate Marijuana Like Wine, in California.

i know paul isnt all great and perfect, btu he would add a dose of honesty from where hes coming from to Washington. Im not naive to believe the president can change everything he talks about, but i do think he can steer the conversation and threaten with vetos.

Maybe Paul can get America to honestly discuss what the war on drugs is doing to our and other countries. If our president can get other countries to step first congress will have to follow eventually if the country wills it

The only BABY that would be thrown out by voting for Ron Paul, or anyone else, would be the lying pesident currently in office.

Discredit, distract, and cast doubt upon others, when one can't stand on their own morality.

Are you Barack Obama, by chance?

Ron Paul IS for the legalization of marijuana. Do your homework on youtube.

LOL, I was saying YOU were trying to cast doubt, distract, and discredit Ron Paul instead of why we should all want to keep the BABY (Obama) that has declared and engaged in an all out war on medical marijuana.

His position on the war on drugs is excellent but unfortunately a great deal of his other policies are scary. I agree that if RP was elected president social services and federal assistance will suffer. As a cannabis voter, RP does not represent my best interest or the country's best interest.

Yes, his position on the war on drugs is excellent, but I particularly like his stance on putting an end to the current socialist state where people have come to expect government hand-outs and federal assistance in place of a hard days work. He speaks often of Greece and the failed european contries that are bankrupt now because of their "I'm-entitled-to-everything-in-life" policies that do nothing but breed lazy people.

Granted, there is nothing wrong with helping a fellow American out for a few months when they are down, but imo, it should never become a way of living, in place of working.

As an American, Ron Paul best represents my hard work pays ethic, my best interest, and the best interest of Capitalism and a Constitutionalist Democracy.

If you think Ron Paul is the legalization of marijuana that's cool but check out what else he is saying.

I have checked it out. Smaller government. Let the individual States govern over their laws and keep Federal OUT of the States business.

The problem is getting over all the fear factors that the Dems and Repubs are planting. It is all a pile of Bull Shi#!!! How long are we going to continue letting these two parties pull the wool over our eyes? Our Government has FAILED the upper middle class down to the poor. Who do we have representing us? I can answer that...NOBODY!

It is time for real change and Ron Paul is the start. Next step is to vote out all the career Senators who are filling their pockets, living the high life and living on easy street. Mitt Romney...HA! How can a person who was fed with a solid gold spoon all his life relate to the backbone (working class) of our country? He is as plastic as a credit card. Gingrich is all the same.

Now they are gearing up to go to war with Iran and using the same old lie that the Dubya Bush administration used and that is weapons of mass destruction. Come on people wake up and smell the coffee! The Repubs and Dems are our enemy. Let us unite and start voting Libertarian. It is our last ditch effort to weaken the power of the ultra-rich and take our country back.

IF there are jobs. We must bring back the jobs that have left our country for slave labor. Not everybody can be college material, but most of these good USA people are excellent with hand-eye coordination and are able to do the boring monotonous work for long hours.

It's hard to talk about one topic with all the problems in this country and to think that the Libertarians (who are against the war on drugs) have all the answers to the other problems. I agree with your statement that the middle class to the poor have no representation but IMO the Libertarian party would also turn there backs to those in need.

Bone,
You might be correct my brother, but how are we going to know until we try? I am sick to my stomach on how the bankers have got off scott free with deliberately mismanaging the Federal money they used. Not one has served a jail term and our leaders are letting it all go. They are white-collar criminals! But let a poor man/woman get caught with a simple joint, they are raked through the mud and their lives are destroyed because they cannot afford the best lawyers who shoot the silver bullets. We have trusted and waited long enough for our current leaders to do something about our broken system and they sit on their lazy duff and refuse to cooperate as we suffer.

Why should these so called leaders, who are rich enough to wipe their ass with 100 bills, be interested in helping us? They are out of touch, do not understand what it is like to have to do without, not to mention suffer.
