A local high school student is facing a drug charge after police said he was high at school on Wednesday and caught with marijuana.

"The student was apparently under the influence," school Superintendent Edward Quigley confirmed Friday.

Police did not arrest the 14-year-old boy, whose name is not being disclosed due to his age, but he was taken into protective custody at the school on Wednesday at 11 a.m., according to a police report, and later released to his father.

School officials told police that Jan Cohn, the school's health teacher, reported the boy "smelled of marijuana," according to the report.

School officials said he admitted to smoking marijuana in the boys' bathroom with a friend, whom he declined to name, according to the report.

School officials searched him and found a marijuana cigarette and a small amount of the drug in a baggie, police said. The boy is being issued a summons on a charge of possession of marijuana, police said.

Quigley said the student in question has no history of behavioral problems that he was aware of, but the boy was immediately suspended per school policy.

"Any substance abuse violation, the student is automatically suspended," Quigley said.

Quigley said he did not believe the school had taken action against any other students as a result of the incident.
