Thirteen states currently have laws allowing marijuana for medical use. A local bioethics expert says it's time that Pennsylvania joins that club.

Arthur Caplan (right), director of the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Bioethics, says House Bill 1393 is pending in the state legislature. He says there are many Pennsylvanians suffering from diseases who could benefit from the legislation:

"Some have glaucoma, some have cancer, and medical marijuana would really go a long way toward helping some of these people. My attitude is if a doctor prescribes it, then marijuana ought to be available to all Pennsylvanians. We should be on board the shift and make sure that Pennsylvanians have everything they need to control their suffering."

Caplan says those against the bill claim it will entice teens to use marijuana. He believes that patients, suffering from illness who are nauseous and in pain, are not glamorous and would not appeal to young people.

House Bill 1393 is sponsored by state representative Mark Cohen of Philadelphia.

lol how would allowing sick people to use a natural medicine have any influence on increasing teens recreational cannabis usage? It's like every person who is opposed has these weak things they hang on to.. "what about the children?" what about them? Seriously, I don't understand how sheltering children any more than they currently are is going to have an effect on what substances they use or do not use. Not passing a law because of what "could" happen based on the views of narrow minded individuals is just pathetic, especially when people are being killed by chemical medicine, and suffering because no man made medicine can help them as well as cannabis can

what about the children . . .
as they age and develope medical problems they won't suffer needlessly because medical marijuana will be easily available to them

exactly right, but this wont happen until people stop using children as an excuse to keep their stupid pointless laws in effect, or to pass even more pointless laws.
