Woodland Council To Discuss Extending Retail Marijuana Moratorium

Washington State - During its Monday meeting, the Woodland City Council will vote on extending a temporary ban on marijuana business another six months. Some proponents of the moratorium say Woodland needs more time to adopt good zoning regulations for where pot businesses can open. The current moratorium expires June 2. Opponents say the city needs to move more quickly or it risks losing interest from marijuana entrepreneurs, who might take their jobs and tax revenues elsewhere.

"By not extending (the ban) six months, we put a deadline on (city officials) to get the job done," council member Scott Perry said at standing-room only council meeting May 5. On a 4-3 vote, the council that evening gave preliminary approval to the extension. Approval Monday would put the extension into effect. Several citizens urged the council to exclude marijuana business from Woodland permanently. "I think the moratorium needs to be extended, so you can go home and search your souls," marijuana opponent Catherine Hunt told the council. "I think we're putting our head in the sand to say that we're not going to have marijuana in our town," Perry said, adding that Woodland has too often said "no" to potentially lucrative industries. Monday's meeting is at 7 p.m. in the Woodland Police Station, 200 East Scott Ave.
