Nutrients & Supplements: A Snake Oil Salesman's Dream...

Recently, I posted an observation/opinion in one of the grow journals here at the 420mag regarding a supplement manufacturer's claim as to the wonderful and just short of amazing benefits and or results their product(s) would have, if you should decide to use them on your plants.

First, let's exchange the word "use" and insert "purchase". "If you purchase..." Now we're getting to the heart of the matter. It has long been a contention of mine, in the grow world, we as growers are looked upon by the manufacturers of all things "grow" as respected clients and potential customers by some, while other companies treat us as the sucker who was born in the last minute. There, I said it.

I look at it like this. Yes, nutrients and fertilizers are most likely a given, supplements are undeniably necessary and a bright light surely cant hurt, but the reality is, they ALL work in conjuntion. I think manufacturers should include a disclaimer in all advertisements devised for soil or hydro application in regard to soils, nutrients, supplements and hardware etc apprising us of the fact that their stuff may not work if something else isnt quite right.

An example would be: "Our XBrand Bud Enhancer will produce the most awesomest mega-dankers on the planet, dude, but if your Ebb & Flow tank looks like the Okiepachokee, your soil is sprouting shroom-looking things, your seeds where so old you found them on the floor of Alice's Restuarant or you are using 3 of your camping lanterns duct-taped together for lighting, you might not see any change...dude.

My point is, as growers, we are all looking for the next best thing and we can be highly obsessive about it. We also major in seeking out anything remotely connected to "user and plant" friendly. In our game, results are paramount. A tomato is just a tomato but growing just OK bud is for losers.

Breakin it all down: Your great soil wont do you any good if your water is crappy. In hydro, just minus the soil if your water indeed is crappy. Your killer strains will be killed strains if your soil/ hydro is OK but you dont have a clue as to what you are doing with either. Assuming you know what youre doing in this area, is your lighting adequate, too close, too far away and how about managing them damn temps?

Finally, Brand X Bud Enhancer wont do diddly if you cant get your plants to the product's intended use stage in a healthy state to where the plant can benefit from the manufacturers claims. As I said, for some reason, they leave that part out.

The grow scene is a bazillion dollar industry. Forget all the advertisement spins and just learn how to grow first. I find grow forums and blogs are the best places to learn what works and what doesnt. These folks are fellow growers. They are in the trenches, sharing knowledge through experience. "Been there, done that" beats a bottle of Snake OIl any day...:peace: MF
